Four pit bulls attacked a man behind a home in Philadelphia late Thanksgiving evening.

The man died at a hospital about an hour after the 9 p.m. attack, the Philadelphia Police Department said.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported the man was in the backyard of a home in north Philadelphia when the attack happened. Officers arrived to the scene to find the man being attacked, reports CBS Philly, prompting an officer to fire one shot, which killed one of the dogs.

PPD said the man was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died at 10:18 p.m. CBS Philly reports the man's death "was not due to the bites."

An investigation is ongoing, reports the Inquirer and CBS Philly.
