RALEIGH, N.C. -- The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services is notifying individuals of a breach which compromised personal information on September 27, 2017.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, a spreadsheet containing the personal information of 6,000 people -- including names, social security numbers and test results was sent to a vendor in an unencrypted email.

The spreadsheet contained information for those who underwent drug screenings for employment, intern and volunteer opportunities at DHHS.

DHHS immediately started an investigation and promptly coordinated with the vendor on the deletion and secure destruction of the personal information in the spreadsheet. While DHHS cannot determine for certain that the email was not intercepted during transmission, DHHS has determined that the risk of misuse of the personal information is low.

The Department of Health mailed letters to affected individuals and has posted information on their website. To protect against fraud, affected individuals may contact the following credit bureaus:

• TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289

The DHHS has also reviewed their procedures to ensure the correct handling of data in the future.
