DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- A motorcyclist was injured after its driver was unable to avoid a section of Interstate 20 that buckled on Monday.
An underground gas leak between Candler and Gresham on I-20 caused a defect in the road around 11 a.m., a DeKalb County police spokesperson said.
DeKalb County Fire Captain Eric Jackson said that a vehicle and a motorcycle both went airborne when they couldn't bypass the buckling.
According to Jackson, the motorcycle came to rest about 200 feet past the buckling. The driver was transported to the hospital and listed in critical condition.
The car came to a rest after about 10 to 15 feet. The driver did not complain of any injuries.
All lanes of I-20 remain closed as authorities continued to investigate Monday afternoon. Motorists are urged to seek alternative routes until further notice.
Traffic is being diverted from I-20 Westbound at I-285 to either I-285 North or I-285 South.
I-20 westbound entrance ramps inside the Perimeter at Columbia Drive, Candler Road and Flat Shoals Road are closed.
