It was all talk until Monday morning when supporters of Calexit took their first formal step towards a statewide vote on whether the golden state should secede from the Union.

Weeks after Donald Trump won the election, talks emerged of Californians voting to form their own country resulted in the name "Calexit."

According to the Los Angeles Times, The Yes California Independence Campaign submitted a proposed ballot measure Monday morning to the state attorney general's office. The group has been around for more than two years.

"We're doing it now because of the overwhelming attention," Marcus Ruiz Evans, the vice president and co-founder of Yes California, told the Times.

The letter requests that the Attorney General prepares a circulating title and summary of the ballot.

According to the L.A. Times, California's attorney general's office will give the ballot measure a title and summary.
