CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A former Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Homicide Detective announced Monday that he will be running for Mecklenburg County Sheriff in 2018.

Garry McFadden made the announcement with video posted on his Twitter account, SugarFreeTalk.

"After much prayer and thought, I've decided to humbly offer myself for service as your next Mecklenburg County Sheriff," McFadden said in the post.

McFadden went on to say his run is an extension of the work he has done in the Queen City community with programs like Cops & Barbers as well as mentoring youth at local high schools.

"I do not take this opportunity lightly and I know I can do it but not without you and your support," McFadden said.
