'Split diamond' would create major changes in Huntersville

NBC Charlotte has learned about a new construction project around Sam Furr Road and I-77 in Huntersville. The North Carolina Department of Transportation said it will improve traffic flow.

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – Major traffic changes could be coming to a fast growing part of the Charlotte area.

NBC Charlotte has learned about a new construction project around Sam Furr Road and I-77 in Huntersville. The North Carolina Department of Transportation said it will improve traffic flow.

“Any improvements to this area with traffic would be great,” said Caity Palmer, a front desk manager at Nue, a business near the proposed project.

Palmer said, right now, they are used to delays in the area.

“A lot of our clients that come in from out of town have a little trouble getting here so anything to help with the congestion and getting people to their appointments on time,” said Palmer.

The project would include roundabouts, bridges, and what’s known as a split diamond.

“When you look at the ramps in relation to the bridge, and you look at it from the air, it kind of resembles the shape of a diamond,” says Jen Thompson, a spokesperson for NCDOT.

Another part of the plan is to widen Highway 73 or Sam Furr Road, which stretches from Lincoln to Mecklenburg County. NCDOT said the plan is in its early stages, and there will be two public meetings next month.

“The area is growing, so by 2040 we could see some segments of 73 increase in traffic in volumes anywhere from 30 to 60 percent,” said Thompson.

“More people are coming to the area, which is nice but we need more improvement as far as traffic,” said Palmer.

NCDOT wants your feedback on the project before moving forward. If approved, construction won’t begin until 2022.
