HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. – A portion of Interstate 77 in Huntersville was shut down for nearly three hours due to a fatal crash Wednesday morning.
Officials say that one person was killed in a crash involving a box truck and a passenger car near mile marker 20 just past the interchange with I-485 just after 8:30 a.m.
Medic confirmed that one person was dead at the scene. A second person was treated for minor injuries at the scene before being taken to CMC-Huntersville.
Multiple emergency personnel are on the scene and a medical helicopter has been requested to transport at least one victim to the hospital.
Huntersville Police posted on Facebook encouraging people to avoid the area while the accident is cleaned up. North Carolina DOT said they expect the highway to remain closed until noon.
Huntersville Fire tweeted that the two left lanes of I-77 were being re-opened just after 10 a.m. The entire roadway was re-opened around 11 a.m.
