CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- State troopers say a man has been arrested in a crash on I-77 south that killed two people Sunday morning.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a crash in the southbound lanes of I-77 near Lasalle Street around 5 a.m.

According to officials, the first car was stalled or traveling at a low rate of speed in the center lane of I-77 south. The second car crashed into the first from behind.

One of the driver in the crash, 24-year-old Roy Mewborn, was charged with felony death by vehicle, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office. State troopers said Mewborn is also being charged with driving while impaired.

Officials told NBC Charlotte the crash killed 33-year-old Phillip Hayes Jr. and 32-year-old Jessica Picatte.
