CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An accident in west Charlotte marks the third car accident-related fatality Tuesday alone.

According to officials, an elderly man in his 80s was driving with his dog in the car when he hit a guardrail. He then hit the back of a parked garbage truck. His car also caught fire and had severe damage.

Medic pronounced the man deceased around 12:20 p.m. Tuesday after an accident closed down the inner loop of I-485 to Wilkinson Blvd. His dog did not survive the crash.

Authorities believe the man is from Saint Augustine, Florida and are trying to reach relatives before releasing his identity.

Officials say there are no indications that alcohol or drugs were a contributing factor in the crash.
