CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police says a woman died following a multiple-vehicle accident near northeast Charlotte Saturday afternoon.

CMPD responded to a call in the 500 block of West Sugar Creek Road in reference to a two-car accident involving an off-duty officer in a marked patrol vehicle. Upon arrival, officers located Wraith Muhammad, a CMPD officer who was driving the marked Ford Explorer, and 25-year-old Lachandra McCorkle.

McCorkle, who was driving a Honda Accord, was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to CMPD. Muhammad was transported by Medic to CMC with minor injuries.

CMPD said the Ford Explorer was traveling south on West Sugar Creek Road towards Sofley Road when the Honda entered the intersection from Sofley Road. Muhammad's Ford Explorer struck the left side of the Honda. Speed does not appear to be a factor leading up to the crash, CMPD said.

West Sugar Creek Road was shut down in both directions for hours before reopening.
