CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Aric Almirola almost made it through Friday’s injury update press conference without addressing the photographers just feet away from him after Saturday’s wreck in Kansas.

“I’m pretty pissed off about it, to be honest with you,” Almirola said before leaving the media room at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “I think that is extremely unprofessional.”

Safety workers had to extricate Almirola after a fiery crash that resulted in a compression fracture of his T5 vertebra.

“They used it as an opportunity to go and take some pictures of me,” Almirola said. “They were literally three feet away from me, hanging through the catch fence with their shutters wide open.”

Outside of his frustration with the professionalism of the photographers, Almirola was thankful the wreck wasn’t worse.

“I didn’t think I was that lucky, but after talking to all the doctors in Kansas and Charlotte I realize how lucky I was," he said.

Almirola expects his recovery to take eight to 12 weeks. Looking back on the crash, he feels there is nothing he could have done differently.

“My car was on ice. I knew it was coming. I saw it. I braced for the wreck. Immediately when I hit Joey’s car, I felt pain in my back. I felt like somebody stuck a knife in my back.”
