CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Checkers introduced Ulf Samuelsson as the team's new head coach on Friday.

Samuelsson is the Checkers' third head coach in the seven AHL seasons. His background includes both playing and coaching.

Samuelsson won two Stanley Cups with Pittsburgh in 1991 and 1992 while playing alongside current Carolina Hurricanes General Manager Ron Francis. He played in 1,080 NHL games as a defenseman over 16 seasons with Hartford, Pittsburgh, the New York Rangers, Detroit and Philadelphia.

Most recently, Samuelsson served as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers, where he reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2014 and the conference final in 2015. He has 10 years of coaching experience in all.
