CHARLOTTE, N.C. – It was announced Monday that Duke will open its 2019 football season against Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

The game, which will be held at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday, August 31, 2019, has become an annual tradition for the start of college football season.

“For starters, we’re both honored and thrilled to represent Duke University and the Atlantic Coast Conference in this game,” Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our program, and obviously an incredible challenge facing the University of Alabama."

The game averages more than 67,000 fans per year, higher than 33 bowl games last season. Each team receives an average payout of $4.7 million and television ratings have been strong with over 47 million people tuning in to the series since its inception in 2008.

“The Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game is an outstanding event and we are excited to open the 2019 season in Atlanta,” said Nick Saban, Alabama head coach. “We have had the opportunity to play in this game on multiple occasions and it is like a bowl game in terms of the competitive venue that’s created. David Cutcliffe has done an excellent job at Duke, and they will be a really good challenge for our team."

Duke and Alabama have met four times in football. The Crimson Tide holds a 3-1 advantage. In the last meeting between the schools, Alabama defeated Duke 62-13 in 2010.
