MATTHEWS, N.C. – In a word, dominance. That’s how you can sum up Butler’s 49-3 win over rival Independence Friday, as the Bulldogs rattled off 35 points in the second quarter to put the Patriots away early en route to a 10-win regular season.
Butler also wrapped up the Southwestern 4A championship by finishing unbeaten in conference play, ahead of one-loss Myers Park. In addition to the conference championship, the Bulldogs laid claim to bragging rights over the Big I for the eleventh time in their last 12 meetings.
Butler senior quarterback Davis Cheek had a complete game, passing for 176 yards and a pair of scores while adding a rushing touchdown. The Bulldogs dug into the bag of tricks, too, with tailback Nijere People throwing to Cheek for a 2-yard touchdown.
Independence kicker Dino Silva drilled a 39-yard field goal to bring the Pats within four, but that was as close as they’d get in the game.
