Connection between Super Bowl and flu deaths

Researchers at Cornell University have studied the correlation between the flu and the big game, and they've found a traceable connection.

The Super Bowl may make the flu season even worse for North Carolina. Researchers at Cornell University have studied the correlation between the flu and the big game, and they’ve found a traceable connection.

“We find about an 18% increase in mortality for those 65 and older in cities that are sending to the super bowl,” Assistant Professor Nicholas Sanders said.

According to the study, out-of-state visitors are more at risk than the hometown fans. Doctors suggest if you’re going to the game, you'd better be vaccinated. Crews at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis are also taking extra precautions to disinfect all surfaces.

Staying local for the Super Bowl comes with risks as well. Dr. Charles Bregier at Novant Health said, “The best thing people can do is limit the spread.”

Using serving spoons, tongs and “no double dipping” signs in the guacamole are smart precautions if you’re planning to host a party on Sunday.

NBC Charlotte is your home for Super Bowl 52 featuring the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.
