Checkers look for fresh start next fall

It certainly wasn't the ending the Checkers wanted this season, missing the AHL playoffs for a second straight season.
The CIAA basketball tournaments are locked up for years to come, with games at Bojangles' Coliseum starting in 2017.

ID=15085827CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It certainly wasn't the ending the Checkers wanted this season, missing the AHL playoffs for a second straight season.

"I think we learned you need to be consistent in your efforts," said defenseman Dennis Robertson, "That's something we'll remember for next year."

"We take this as a learning experience," said center Patrick Brown, "We didn't win enough games and guys will work really hard this summer to try and make next year a better one."

A lot of positives to build on though for younger squad that seemed to find its groove over the last couple months.

"Hopefully in the long run, these kids can learn to fast track a little faster," said head coach Jeff Daniels, "They were able to do a lot their first year and hopefully they can grow from that."

"We need to make sure we bring it every single night," said Robertson.

Of course next season will be the start of a new era so to speak for Checkers Hockey; the team moves from Time Warner Cable Arena in uptown to the Bojangles' Coliseum.

"It will be nice to have that one place they can call home and know where they're going to be," said Daniels.

"We'll have our own locker room, our own space there," said Brown, "It's going to be our arena, and we'll treat it like home."

"That place should be rocking so I'm excited to play there," said Robertson.

There is plenty of excitement for a new beginning for the franchise.
