A portion of N. Tryon St. will be shut down until October 8

A part of North Tryon Street will be shut down near Optimist Hall. The reason why it is being shut down and how to get around this construction.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

A part of North Tryon Street is now closed

At 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 23, a section of North Tryon Street was closed between East 16th Street and West 15th Street. This is an area that is known for flooding when heavy rain is over Uptown, in the Belmont/Optimist Park neighborhood. The project is three projects in one. Combining wastewater, Stormwater and a streetscape project all into one.

The main objective is to replace Stormwater pipes on North Tryon Street. This will reduce the amount of flooding and protect the water quality. Since there are multiple projects happening at once, this closure will continue for about 15 days, ending October 8.

There will be detour signs but this is going to be a headache for a lot of people. Here is how to get around it:

INBOUND on North Tryon: This is easy. Take Dalton Ave to North Graham Street and you are heading right into Uptown.

OUTBOUND on North Tryon you will need to follow a lot of signs and turns:

  • Take N. Tryon Street
  • Right onto W. 11th Street
  • Left onto North College Street
  • Left onto W. 12th Street
  • Right onto N. Graham Street
  • Right onto Dalton Avenue
  • Then left back onto N. Tryon Street

Charlotte Water "understands that construction can be inconvenient, but this closure is necessary to ensure the safety of all individuals. Please note, schedules are subject to change due to weather and other conditions."

16th Street Streetscape Project:

This project will be making 16th street shine between North Tryon Street and Parkwood Avenue.

This project will include a two-lane roadway, bicycle lanes, planting strips, sidewalks and street lights. Partnering with LYNX, connections to nearby Blue Line Stations are in the works. This will make it also easier for biking and walking.
