Charlotte may see up to an inch of snow Sunday night into Monday morning

Winter weather in Charlotte? Don't rule it out.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- As viewers in the North Carolina mountains brace for snow, Charlotteans may need to keep their coats handy as winter weather is possible Sunday night into early next week.

"We've got the potential, and I say potential, of winter weather this weekend," First Warn Storm Team Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich. "I'm talking late weekend, Sunday into Monday."

Panovich said snow is expected to move into North Carolina Sunday night into Monday. Those living north of Boone may see up to eight inches of snow, while viewers in the foothills may see between one to four inches of snow.

Viewers in Charlotte may see traces to an inch of snow.

A winter storm watch was issued for Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties from Sunday night to Monday a little after 2 p.m.

"We have a low-pressure system coming through with some cold air on the backside," said First Warn Storm Meteorologist Sarah Fortner.

She said those living in north Mecklenburg County may wake up to traces of snowfall Monday morning.

As for Sunday, highs are expected to be a little below 50 degrees with lows of around 40 degrees in the Queen City. Charlotte will be under 80-percent chance of rain that day. Fortner said widespread rain is expected around 3 p.m.

Fortner said freezing rain and snow mix should arrive in the Charlotte area around 2 a.m. Monday. She said temperatures may dip close to freezing temperatures around 5 a.m. in the area.

"Because we're going to be so close [to 32 degrees], we've got to be prepared for the Monday morning commute," Fortner said.

Highs in the Queen City are expected to be in the mid-40s Monday.
