Farm family hustles to get animals ready for snow

The roads are prepped with thousands of gallons of brine scattered across Union County. The only thing left to do is wait. But the Tartaglia family has no time to sit around their farm.

UNION COUNTY, N.C. -- The roads are prepped with thousands of gallons of brine scattered across Union County. The only thing left to do is wait.

“If it snows it’s in the hands of our Lord and savior, Jesus Christ,” exclaimed Mrs. Frayl.

While nearly everyone else waits, the Tartaglia family has no time to sit around on their farm.

“So we have 114 chickens,” said Holly Tartaglia, who sells eggs for Whisper Creek farm.

They also have quail, ducks, even a pig.

Holly and Rob and their kids work tirelessly to keep their barnyard buddies warm.

“We have a rooster right now, because he dips his face into the water, it freezes on here and now he’s got frostbite on his waddles.”

The animals are loved, most of them have names, and their accommodations are prepared to withstand the cold temperatures, but before the rooster crows in Union County, folks fill their tanks and tires.

“You got to be prepared out here,” said one man who refilling the air in his tires.

No matter what kind of wheel you find yourself behind, it’s important to be ready for whatever this weather brings.

“The kids actually do the lion share of the work. I just get to drive the tractor!” said Rob Tartaglia.
