York County braces for outages, flooding from Hurricane Florence

County officials are most concerned about the water levels at the Catawba River which was five times the recreational flow late Thursday afternoon.

YORK COUNTY, N.C. — York County's emergency management team is preparing for at least 10 inches of rain from Hurricane Florence.

Rock Hill firefighters rolled out boats and kayaks in the event they have to rescue anyone from their homes.

“We can actually move people very quickly and get them out, said Captain Chris Summers. “With the raft, we can actually walk beside it or paddle in it.”

County officials are most concerned about the water levels at the Catawba River which was five times the recreational flow late Thursday afternoon.

“The challenge there is with the water stacking up at the coast with the surge that is being pushed in, said Chuck Haynes, director of the county’s emergency management department. “Getting that water to flow out is going to take some time for that to happen.”

As Florence is expected to make landfall Friday morning, officials urge anyone who lives in York County to be prepared. Wind gusts are expected to reach 50 miles per hour which means there could be power outages for thousands of residents.

Several shelters are opening in York County and other areas on Friday.
