Iredell County crews prep roads with brine

"If the snow was to stall over us and get more than one to two inches, we're ready for that," maintenance engineer, Matthew Evan said.

STATESVILLE, N.C. -- People living along the I-40 corridor spent Tuesday preparing their homes, businesses and the roads for potential overnight snow.

Iredell County's DOT maintenance engineer, Matthew Evans, said crews sprayed more than 55,000 gallons of brine on major roadways.

Workers spent much of Tuesday morning cleaning out their trucks' brine tanks and attaching plows to the trucks.

"If the snow was to stall over us and get more than one to two inches, we're ready for that," Evans said.

Evans said about 30 state and contractor trucks will be on stand-by starting Tuesday evening.

In Catawba County, many shoppers, including Angie Speagle, took advantage of above-freezing temperatures to stock up on essential items at local grocery stores.

"I don't think it's going to be too bad this time," Speagle said. "But it seems like every time we think we know what's going to happen, [it's] something worse."

The phones had been ringing non-stop at Conover Hardware as owner Penny Matthews said customers are looking to buy ice melt, shovels and sleds.

"Everyone that I've spoken to today has been excited about the snow," Matthews said. "Considering it's so cold, they say let it snow."
