Mecklenburg County activating emergency shelter ahead of winter weather

An emergency shelter was activated Tuesday ahead of the winter weather coming to the Carolinas.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- An emergency shelter was activated Tuesday ahead of the winter weather coming to the Carolinas.

The shelter will be open at 5:30 p.m. at the Grady Cole Center on the Central Piedmont Community College Campus at 310 N. Kings Drive in Charlotte. The shelter is expected to close at noon on Thursday, January 18.

Everyone, including couples, families and individuals with service animals are welcome to seek shelter. American Red Cross volunteers will be on hand along with Mecklenburg County staff. The Red Cross will provide cots, blankets, meals and snacks.

The Urban Ministry Center Outreach Team will encourage homeless individuals to visit a shelter or provide sleeping bags and blankets if they refuse to go to a shelter.

Here is a list of partner shelters already in place:

-Salvation Army Center of Hope – 534 Spratt Street, Charlotte

-Men’s Shelter of Charlotte – 1210 North Tryon Street, Charlotte

-Urban Ministry Center (Room in the Inn) – 945 North College Street, Charlotte

Most restrictions have been waived during the severe cold weather period.
