CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Grab those coats! The Carolinas will experience an arctic blast beginning Wednesday and continuing well into next week.

Ahead of the cold front, look for some much needed rain. Showers could begin late Tuesday afternoon, with the heaviest rain likely into the night.

"We do need the rain, it's been very dry," Larry Sprinkle said.

Those in Charlotte and the surrounding areas can expect the heaviest rainfall between 7 p.m. and into Wednesday's early morning hours. A few more showers are possible during the afternoon on Wednesday, Sprinkle said.

Rainfall totals can range from a half to three quarters of an inch.

There may be some wet snow mixing-in with the rain in our mountain communities Tuesday night, with no accumulation expected.
