CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Showers and thunderstorms in the Charlotte area resulted in a ground stop at Charlotte Douglas International Airport Wednesday afternoon.

Just after noon, the Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop for all flights bound for Charlotte. That ground delay remained in effect until just before 5 p.m.

Airport officials tweeted that departing flights were delayed by up to an hour.

The same weather system impacting the Carolinas also hammered parts of Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.

Airport officials urge all travelers to check with their airlines on the status of their flights.
