CHARLOTTE, NC - Did you know that using your ceiling fan in winter can cut down your home heating bill by ten percent?  It will if you set the motor to reverse to circulate the warm air.

It is just one of the many cool tips we found in ‘The Green Year’ by Jodi Helmer, and she joins us today to talk about ideas to cut costs and go green at the same time.

1.     Make sure to change your furnace filters.  If they are old and full of dust, then your unit will have to work harder to pull air in and out of it.  That will make the energy bill increase.
2.    Switch your light bulbs to energy efficient CFL (Compact Fluorescent Lamp) bulbs.
3.    Turn down the temperature on your thermostat.  For every degree you turn it down you will save 3% on your energy bill.
4.    Seal cracks around your windows and doors with weather stripping to insulate your house better.
5.    Rethink your laundry routine.  If you switch to cold water for everything except bedding and towels, then you will save up to 50% of your laundry’s energy output.
