www.unclaimed.org--This is the official site of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (NAUPA) where people can check any state they ever lived in. There is also a link at the top that I'd like to mention. It's the orange tab that says Other Sources for Unclaimed Property. It will take folks to federal sites and a few international ones. Federal money does not get turned over to the states. You have to search the individual agency. Federal agencies listed include:
The IRS (www.irs.gov) click "Where's my Refund?"
Treasury Department (www.TreasuryDirect.gov) 40 million savings bonds have matured and should be cashed in and reinvested. The estimated value is more than $16 billion!
Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation (www.pbgc.gov) 38,000 people are owed more than $300 million including a single listing for more than $700,000! I'm getting the exact numbers for NC and SC.
Housing and Urban Development http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/comp/refunds/index.cfm Refunds for mortgage insurance obtained by a government loan. These refunds will expire if not claimed!
Statute of Limitations: HUD is not liable for a distributive share that remains unclaimed 6 years from the date notification was first sent to the last known address of the mortgagor.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation http://www2.fdic.gov/funds/index.asp Your money may be FDIC insured, but not indefinitely. Say you had an acct with Washington Mutual that went under, and the FDIC issued you a check but it was returned because of a bad address. The money gets turned over to the state unclaimed property office of the person's last known address. It's held there for 10 years. If it's not claimed, it gets returned to the FDIC and you lose all rights to it!!
Department of the Interior http://www.doi.gov/ost/ This is not listed among the federal sites but is relevant to NC because it holds more than $70 million for Native Americans.
