CHARLOTTE, NC - The PEN Pals Book Club has definitely had an impact on the youth of North Carolina that struggles with having an incarcerated parent.

They become involved with practicing literacy by their monthly or bi-monthly novel readings.  Report card grades have improved and this youth group has shown vast improvement of getting into less trouble in school.

Illiteracy, Olivia Stinson says, is the major problem in the world. “Everyone needs to be able to read because that is the key to living a productive life,” affirms Stinson.

Olivia is honored as a “Next MAKER” on MAKERS.com (along with just 5 other women across the U.S.), and as a result of this honor she just received a $10K grant from SIMPLE SKINCARE. People can see her videos/full story here: www.makers.com/olivia-joy-stinson

They  are currently in the process of several projects including collecting coats for a local boys and girls club; and collecting new and gently used books to set up a library in a transitional house for women recently released from prison.
