CHARLOTTE, NC - Today we are asking important questions for you about some of the most common medications.

What is the right time of day to take diuretic blood pressure meds?
It is always best to take diuretic blood pressure medicine in the morning because it causes you to have to urinate more often.  Taking them in the morning helps prevent having to get up in the middle of the night to have to go to the bathroom.

Why do you say statin Cholesterol meds should be taken in the evening?
Statin cholesterol medicines as well as cholesterol medicines in general are best to take at night because your body produces more cholesterol at night.  It is also important to keep in mind taking them as night as opposed to at bedtime when it comes to people that have the graveyard shift.  There is also new data out saying that when treating cholesterol it is more important to get your Triglyceride: HDL (good cholesterol) to at least a 3:1 ratio respectively as opposed to older data mostly treating each lipid panel factor (LDL, HDL, TC, TG) individually.

What is the best way to maximize acid reflux meds?
It is important to take all proton pump inhibitors (Prilosec, Nexium, Aciphex, Prevacid, Protonix) 30-45 minutes prior to breakfast (if most of your reflux happens during the day) or dinner (if you experience reflux while sleeping).  This helps the medication because it does not have to compete with food to absorb if taken on an empty stomach.  It is also important to eat within the hour so that the medication is maximally absorbed.

Which Children’s antibiotics need to be stored at room temperature?
While most liquid antibiotics are best to refrigerate to make them taste better, a few of them are required to be left at room temperature because they will otherwise get too thick and thus will not be able to be poured into a dosing spoon/syringe.  The two most common ones that should be left at room temperature are Omnicef & Zithromax.  The other two that should be stored at room temperature are Bactrim & Cleocin.

Can you explain what is the right way to take birth control pills?
It is always best to take birth control pills in the same three hour time window every day (aka between 7-10 am, etc).  If you miss a dose take it when you remember it and take the next dose at the regularly scheduled time.  It is always safest to use backup birth control for a week (condom, spermicide, etc) if you miss a dose because some women are more sensitive than others and can become pregnant if they do not take their birth control at the same time every day.

As a general rule of thumb, always have your pharmacist tell you what your medications are for, how you should take them, and what to expect in terms of adverse reactions, drug reactions, and the like.
