CHARLOTTE, NC - When it comes to eating healthier, nutritionist after nutritionist will tell you that you better start reading your food labels.
But have you ever really looked at a label? It can be a little confusing if you don’t know what you are looking for. Dayvee Sutton and nutritionist Melanie Zook took a trip to Food Lion to learn some tips on how to shop healthier.
1. Make sure you check the calorie count and the serving size. You should measure out the serving size when you get home to really get a good visual on the amount of calories you are consuming.
2. Keep cholesterol and saturated fats intake to a minimum.
3. Avoid trans fats. Some items might say they don’t have trans fats in them, but if it contains hydrogenated oil then it does.
4. Look for reduced sodium. Lower sodium will help with lowering blood pressure.
5. Try to notice labels that say increased vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and fiber. You might buy orange juice or bread on a regular basis and the same brand has those added values right next to the original version.
