If you haven’t heard of this place, don’t be alarmed. It just opened in November. Halcyon, Flavors of the Earth is a Farm to Fork restaurant that’s located at the Mint Museum in Uptown. I chose this one simply because no one‘s really been there, and the location was intriguing.
Now I must warn you about the location, because people seemed to be confused as to where it actually was. (I even ran into a group on the street walking from corner to corner of the block looking for it.) It can also be confusing especially at night, when the Mint is closed, because you can’t believe that the restaurant is actually up the main stairs to the entrance of the museum. But it is true…go up the stairs (at the front of the museum on South Tryon) and to the left you’ll find the restaurant. (If you park in the deck, go to the second floor in the elevator, walk up the stairs to the main level of the Mint, and the restaurant is strait ahead.)Because of what I observed and experienced, the restaurant could use more signs on the ground level to let patrons know their exact location.
However, the atmosphere was very elegant. The way my friends and I decided to describe it was modern- rustic. There are tree trunk stools, wooden tables and branch-like chandeliers, combined with smooth lines and marble countertops. The place also had great city views with ceiling-to-floor windows on three sides; you could see everything straight onto South Tryon St. But hey, it lives next to museums, so you’d expect it to be nothing less than interesting.
With an eight o’clock reservation they were busy, but the staff was friendly and very accommodating. The cool thing is while you wait you can have a drink at the bar or in the waiting area (on the tree trunk stools.)
Their typical menu has appetizers ranging from $7-$10 and the entrees topping out at $24. (You can get a burger for about $12 bucks.) The Restaurant Week menu actually offered four courses if you count the bread and humus they placed on the table. (That was so tasty!) My friend Lisa got the Pate for an appetizer, while Ramona Holloway and I got the farm salad. The Restaurant Week menu also offered three different entree options. Ramona got the chicken, Lisa the short ribs and I was in the mood for cheesiness…so I got the vegetarian lasagna. The portion sizes were decent, and we all had room for dessert. Lisa and I got crème Brule, and Ramona ate the bread pudding.
Halcyon is a classy location, but you aren’t expected to dress up to dine. You can also consider them for brunch and lunch if you are Uptown, although they don’t have a special Queens Feast Menu for anything other than dinner. For us, it was a good time of girl talk in a beautiful atmosphere.
