Kabuto Lake Norman Japanese Steakhouse features hibachi grills with family style dinning around the grills. I picked this place to give some love to the people in the Lake Norman area, and because most of the time…you can’t go wrong with hibachi grill restaurants. (Or I guess you could go wrong…terribly wrong.) But, that was definitely not the case when I went.

When I walked in, the mood was upbeat. We were seated and our adorable waitress began to serve us. And then…the food began to come out. We used the Restaurant Week menu, which offers two more courses in addition to the normal hibachi and sushi menu. So I mean, THE FOOD BEGAN TO COME OUT!

Each meal they start you off with Onion Soup and House Salad. And because I was hungry, I ate those with ease and without hesitation.  I should have paced myself. I ordered the Chicken Katsu for my first course. That’s panko-fried white meat chicken, and it was so good, that I had to stop when I realized I still had to get to my entrée, Filet Mignon. My friend Lee ordered Tempura Shrimp and the Fresh Sushi boat.

The hibachi chef entertained us with fire tricks and drums, as he cooked and plated the rice, noodles and vegetables.  I quickly found that I was full before he even finished. I’ve heard that in Asian cultures they are offended if you don’t clean your plate. But the manager, Megan, assured me that it is inevitable that I would take home a lot of my meal. Including an extra dessert, I took home three boxes. Lee…cleaned her plate.

For dessert we both ordered cheesecake, but the manager insisted that we try the Chocolate Lava Cake. There’s a chocolate truffle inside the middle and when served warm it melts into chocolatity-deliciousness. I am glad Megan convinced me to get it!

Kabuto is a family friendly place. Its fun and a good place to have a birthday party. They like to call it Dinner Theatre. But if you do decide to have your party there, let me warn you that you may have to do the chicken dance when the staff comes out to sing for you.
