On an ordinary lunch break the students at North Mecklenburg High School were surprised with a Random Act of Culture. Although the students did not know what they were experiencing, they did know to pull out their cell phones and document the performance. They giggled, jokes and texted, and after about five minutes they finally started to enjoy it.
Random Acts of Culture is an initiative started by the Arts and Science Council two years ago. They have partnered with Opera Carolina and their purpose is to simply increase the appreciation of the fine arts. The Knight Foundation has targeted Charlotte as one of seven cities in the country where investments to help build community through the arts have been granted. So these pop up performances have been at farmers markets, shopping centers, Charlotte-Douglas airport, colleges and high schools.
The reactions are enjoyable for the performers who say they love introducing their art to an audience who may have never had an opportunity to hear opera otherwise. The Arts and Science Council has a list of places to perform that will keep this program going for the next several years. So although you never know when these Random Acts of Culture will happen, you can support them by visiting www.artsandscience.org
