Balancing your time in the kitchen

As women, we have so much to do already.  The last thing we want to do is be stuck in the kitchen half the evening preparing a meal.  The goal is to get in and out as quickly as possible, but still make sure that your family was given a nutritious healthy meal.  The following tips will lessen the amount of time busy moms spend in the kitchen:


• Clean as you go. It is so aggravating for a mom when dinner is over and it is time to clean up.  If you clean while you are preparing the meal, it will save you time on the after-dinner clean up.  I recommend that you fill the sink with warm water so that you can quickly wash a pot or pan that you used to cook a portion of the dinner.  You can also fill the dishwasher as you go, if that is your method of cleaning.

• From scratch is not mandatory.  Make use of prepared items in your grocery store.  If you can use steam fresh vegetables, why do you have to go to the garden and pick the vegetables and then boil them for 30-45 minutes vs. 5 minutes in the microwave?  As long as it is not harmful to your family, your children won’t know the difference and certainly won’t love you any less.  This frees up the amount of time you have to spend preparing and cooking the food.

• Allow your children to help.  Bring your children into the kitchen and let them participate in the cooking process. Children typically look forward to the opportunity to cook with mommy.  Sometimes they will insist on helping even when you don’t want them to help that day. 


Remember to keep it simple! Save fancy meals for special occasions and pre-plan as many of your meals as possible. The goal is to spend more time with your family than the time you are spending in the kitchen. Enjoy your brief time in the kitchen.
