When you think of Memorial Day Weekend in Charlotte, you can't help but thing of racing - and as you saw in yesterday's "Free and Cheap" items, there are plenty of free NASCAR-related events to choose from. But even if racing is not your thing, you won't lack for fun family events. Here's a sample weekend itinerary for the broke, and the cheap-at-heart:
Friday, 7PM: Go on a free "Critters of the Night" evening hike at Reedy Creek Park. Naturalists will help you identify the sounds (and if you're lucky, sights) of nocturnal animals.
Saturday, Buy a $10 family splash pass to Huntersville Family Fitness Aquatics for the whole weekend. Print out this coupon and bring it with you for the special price.
Saturday, The Mint Hill Highland Games are going on all day, but make sure to get there by 1:30PM to see the sheepdogs, followed by the "Bonnie Legs" competition. $5 per car
Saturday, 7PM: Choose between free concerts at Birkdale, Stonecrest, and Blakeney Village Green.
Sunday: Take the family kayaking at McDowell Nature Preserve. Just $12 for the whole family - if you can fit into one boat, that is.
Sunday, 7PM: Classi-Kool Music Festival at Freedom Park
Monday: Spend day at Huntersville Family Fitness Aquatics, using your family splash pass.
Total cost for family: $27
