CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More than $100,000—for free.
That’s what three local high school students received Wednesday, and they didn’t even know it was coming.
The surprise prize was a four-year scholarship from Queens University called the Presidential Scholarship valued at more than $100,000.
“I get to go to school and I get to live on this campus and I get to live in the dorms,” recipient Nancy Velazquez said. “I’m really overwhelmed and excited.”
The Olympic High School senior applied for the scholarship last year and has been waiting ever since. To say she was caught off guard is an understatement.
“I don’t even think I can cry. I’m so excited,” Velazquez said.
Nancy will join her sister, who already attends Queens University. They are the first ones in her family to go to college. She wants to study nutrition and become a child nutritionist.
Armando Cruz Martinez of East Mecklenburg High School and Amy Bareham from Waxhaw’s Cuthberson High School were also both surprised today with full rides to Queens University as well.
