CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More people in the United States are applying for unemployment.
Applications jumped by 11,000 last week, and that's the highest level in three months.
What makes that even worse is that the week included the Labor Day holiday. Usually applications drop during short work weeks.
At Johnson C. Smith University students got the chance Thursday to learn more about the retail industry.
Representatives from major retail companies like Belk and Wal-Mart came and spoke to the students.
Students say in a tough job market it's good to get an early start learning about job options.
The Charlotte region is home to four Fortune 500 retailers.
