Savings Series: Best day to buy what
08:30 AM EST on Thursday, November 15, 2007
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Time to arm yourself with insider shopping secrets! And we'll start with this riddle: Can you get today's deal for the same low price tomorrow?
Okay, if that sounds like gibberish, let's get down to the bottom line: Certain bargains live only on certain days of the week. So mark your calendar because every day for a week, we are going to tell you about a deal you can only get today! We'll update the list daily so you can print it out and go shopping.
FRIDAY: We saved the best for last. And this one is for all you brides to be. This weekend, start your wedding dress shopping. Because with everyone obsessed over the holidays, brides are waiting until January to buy their dresses. That means this is prime time to negotiate a good deal on a scene-stealer of a gown. Also, retailers are trying to move out this year's gowns to make room for the 2008 line of dresses. It's a great time to buy!
THURSDAY: Thursday is a great day to find a bargain at your favorite clothing store. The markdowns are in but the sale starts before the weekend rush. Wait until the weekend, and those racks will be picked over. Also, Thursdays are a great day to find a deal on books - Borders coupons and other markdowns come out on Thursdays.
WEDNESDAY: Wednesday is a great day to be entertained. On Wednesday exists savings you won't find any other day of the week like at local watering holes, the movies, museums, and limo rentals. Our advice? Rent a limo, take in a movie or Mint Museum lecture, take a load off and do it at a discount. Hint: Check out AMC theaters -- adults get in on Wednesdays for the kid's ticket price. On Wednesdays, Carvel offers buy one, get one free ice cream sundae at any of their locations.
TUESDAY: Tuesday is the best day to get a deal on airfare. And the reason for that is airlines tend to launch fare sales on Friday nights when nobody’s looking to see what happens over the weekend. And that's when a lot of matching and undercutting happens. "So by Tuesday night at midnight," says Travel Guru Peter Greenberg, "all those people who booked those discount fares don't show up to buy them, (and) all those discount fares go back into the system. So for about an hour or two hours, it's a field day for discounts if you stay up late and call."
MONDAY: Monday is the best day to buy a car. Some experts say if you shop for a car on Monday, you are hitting the car lot on a low traffic day. Just after the weekend rush, Monday will not bring in big sales numbers for car dealers. Another good tip - October, November, and December are great times to buy current year models because as the year winds down, car dealers want their sales numbers up and to get rid of old inventory.
SUNDAY: Sunday is the best day to get a discount on a hotel room. Why? Because it's the one day of the week that the hotel revenue managers -- those are the guys whose job it is to set the rates --- are not working. When you call, "you are going to get the front desk clerk and they know an unsold hotel room is revenue that will never be recouped once the sun rises," says Today Show Travel Editor Peter Greenberg.
There is one caveat - if you call the hotel and ask for reservations, they will re-route you to a 1-800 number call center - that's not where the bargain is. Be sure to ask for the front desk of the hotel you are calling.
