LAKE NORMAN, N.C. -- If you’ve heard a lot of “tweens” screaming lately, it might be because the youngest Jo-Bro is in town shooting a movie. It’s the first starring role for Nick Jonas in a feature film that, believe it or not, doesn’t involve music.
Careful What You Wish For is an independent movie that started shooting in the Charlotte area last month and will wrap up in the end of May.
IMDB describes the plot as “a guy gets more than he bargained for after entering into an affair with the wife of an investment banker. Soon, a suspicious death and substantial life insurance policy embroil him in a scandal.”
The crew is quietly shooting along Lake Norman, which is actually doubling for Lake Lure near Asheville.
Producer Bradley Gallo says the script called for a quaint, smaller town and they considered shooting in Georgia and Seattle but chose North Carolina because the lakes in the area offered the setting they needed and the tax incentives helped with the low budget film.
Gallo first came to town two months ago to scout locations, and says, “We love the people. The locals have been extremely helpful in making things happen. They’ll loan you their car, house, even give you a boat. All of that has helped along the way.”
He says the challenge to shooting in the Charlotte area is finding enough crew and the distance between set locations.
“In New York or L.A., everything is right there at your disposal,” he says.
Another unexpected challenge? Mother Nature has been a little, uh, unkind lately.
“The weather has been exactly opposite from what it was supposed to be. We had to rearrange a lot of schedules and we did the rain dance a few days.”
But he calls star Nick Jonas “Super, super talented. I’m not surprised, but I’m impressed by his acting ability. He’s so professional.”
And it would seem, entertaining. During breaks Jonas takes to the piano or guitar.
“He’ll just start playing and the crew gravitates to him.”
Fans are also gravitating to him-- when they can find him.
“They can’t find the set,” the producer says, “It’s amazing how good we’ve been.”
But away from the set Jonas is regularly spotted and unless he is eating, always poses for fan photos.
“He always stops. He never says no.”
Last week Jonas himself tweeted, “Filming has been going great.”
Older brother Joe came to visit last weekend and his parents have also visited the set.
