CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- She is one of America's most well known talk show hosts.

Kathie Lee Gifford was in Charlotte as the keynote speaker to help raise money for a local non-profit last week.

NBC Charlotte was the only TV crew to sit down with her.

We got her to spill all -- about the wine, her old friend Regis and her new best friend, Hoda.

Before we even start the interview, Kathie Lee Gifford is already drinking. Alas, it's only water.

Gifford and co-host Hoda Kotb are known for the wine they seem to always be drinking on the fourth hour of The Today Show.

"If you notice, I have a sip. It’s sitting there so we used it. I use it for humor. It’s a prop in our play basically, but if it’s there and looking good, yeah, I'll take a sip. Guilty! It has become a total shtick. We never planned it that way. Chelsea Handler was on our show years ago when I first joined Hoda with a new book, Hello Vodka it’s me Chelsea or something like that, and our producers for that interview prepared a bunch of stuff. She was sloshing them back and it was just funny. Brooke Shields came on, she goes, ‘Where's my cocktail?’ And then everybody started bringing their own bottles.

And Gifford points out, as early risers, 11 a.m. is sort of their happy hour.

We all first got to know Kathie Lee as the host of that other talk show, when she sat next to Regis Philbin for more than a decade. The two are still close and he visited her house just a few weeks ago.

“We spent an hour just reminiscing and I was so touched. This friendship that I have with him has lasted all these years. I've been off that show now almost as long as I was on it, and we pick up exactly where we left off every time,” she says.

Kathie Lee admits she never expected to have that kind of chemistry a second time but says she and Hoda are great friends on and off the screen.

“She’s coming down to my place in the Keys in a few weeks with her boyfriend. We spend lots of weekends together, we travel. What you see is real. It’s real!”
