Former "Bachelorette" and Charlotte resident Emily Maynard sat down for a one-on-one interview with NBC Charlotte's Michelle Boudin. She discussed her new jewelry line, love life and why she plans to keep her work in the Queen City:
Michelle Boudin: “Emily Maynard for Towne & Reese” launched Wednesday, July 10, 2013. It will be sold online and at Charlotte area boutiques.
Maynard: I can’t believe it’s finally here. I’ve had this day in my calendar, like giant stars highlighted. It just feels really surreal.
Michelle Boudin: How long have you been working on this?
Maynard: Almost a year now. I guess it was right when I got home from "The Bachelorette" (that) we started working on it.
Michelle Boudin: Why did you partner with the Charlotte-based company Towne & Reese?
Maynard: I wore a lot of Towne & Reese on "The Bachelorette" and "The Bachelor" and just became friends with Jessica and Christi, who started the line. And once I got home from "The Bachelorette" and things kind of calmed down, I was wondering what’s next, and really praying about what I should do, what my next step should be. I was going to open up a children’s store here in Charlotte, but I talked to Jessica and it just seemed like the next right step for me to take. I was just so grateful that they even would consider it.
Michelle Boudin: Why did a jewelry line make the most sense?
Maynard: It’s no secret, I’m a girly girl all day long, in every sense of the word. So jewelry was the perfect fit for me.
Michelle Boudin: What was the process actually like?
Maynard: I just thought I’d draw up some pretty designs and then that’s it. Turns out I’m a really horrible drawer so I didn't do that. And there’s a lot more that goes into it than just looking at pretty things all day. Everything from the logo, to the tag, to how long the chains are. Just every little tiny detail that went into it. It was a lot more than I ever expected. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot.
Michelle Boudin: Is “Emily Maynard for Towne & Reese” a onetime deal?
Maynard: No! We’re already working on the next season!
Michelle Boudin: Do you think we’re talking to a budding fashion designer?
Maynard: You know, I never thought I'd be doing a jewelry line, so I’ve learned to never say never and just be thankful for each day and what it has to offer. Right now I’ve put so much of my heart into the jewelry that I'm just loving this part of my life right now.
Michelle Boudin: I think a lot of people might be surprised to hear that talking to you, you seem like the L.A. thing is in the past and like a fairly typical single mom.
Maynard: Thank you for that, first of all! I think the show can really change you. I’ve seen it change a lot of people in not the best ways, but I have a really strong faith and I also have a really honest 8 year old that will tell me the brutal honest truth. The other day I had on a red polka dot dress. She said, ‘You look like Minnie Mouse’. And I was like ok, well I will go change. So she keeps me very humble.
Michelle Boudin: Do you think you’ll stay in Charlotte?
Maynard: I just love life in Charlotte. My family is here, my friends are here. I don’t see myself ever leaving.
Michelle Boudin: You’ve had offers to do other things. Have you turned them down?
Maynard: The show was a great experience but I kind of just wanted to go into a hole after the filming and just sink back into normal everyday life, and not get caught up in all the craziness that can surround it.
Michelle Boudin: How tough was that?
Maynard: It is just uncomfortable, you know. It is what I signed up for. Nobody can really prepare you for it because literally the night of the first episode your whole life changes. I just tried to remind myself it’s a very, very short time in my life and I’ll be able to look back on it and know this was so crazy. Who else gets to experience that and just kind of laugh about it. But when it starts to affect my family and people at the grocery store that are just trying to get some cat litter, I felt really bad.
Michelle Boudin: On ‘The Bachelorette’ you ended up with Jef Holm. Do you still talk to him?
Maynard: You know, I haven’t talked to him in awhile, but from what I hear he’s doing really well.
Michelle Boudin: We’ve heard you’ve been cozy with someone at church. Do you want to say anything at all?
Maynard: Church is a great place to meet really nice guys.
Michelle Boudin: Have you actually met someone?
Maynard: I have (and then she pauses for a few seconds). I have yeah, but I've known him for a long time. I met him far before I did the show.
Michelle Boudin: And you just reconnected?
Michelle Boudin: You seem a little reluctant.
Maynard: Well my last couple relationships have been really public and this one’s just really special to me and I’ve learned from error that it’s best just to keep it private and special to my heart.
