Charlotte native Eva Noblezada nominated for Tony Award

A Charlotte native and Northwest School of the Arts graduate has been nominated for a Tony Award.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Tony Award Nominations have been announced and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools alum Eva Noblezada is up for Best Actress in a Musical.

Noblezada left Northwest School of the Arts to take the lead in West End's production of "Miss Saigon" in England just before graduation.

The now 21-year-old performs the lead role in "Miss Saigon," a musical that tells the story of a Vietnamese girl who falls in love with an American soldier during the ending days of the war.

"If you've seen the performance, then you would know," said Northwest School of the Arts drama teacher Corey Mitchell. "I'm completely over the moon and excited for her."

Mitchell wasn't surprised by the nomination and told Noblezada to expect one when she came by for a visit weeks ago.

"And I said, 'So — you're getting a Tony Nomination this year,' and she said, 'I don't even what to think about it.'"

The Tony awards will be held on June 11 in New York City.
