LIBERTY LAKE, Wash. -- A Liberty Lake man was arrested for driving a golf cart while drunk back in August.

Ben Rowe admitted to KREM 2 News he had a couple of drinks when he was arrested for DUI after grabbing dinner with some friends. Rowe said he wanted to do the right thing and take a friend’s golf cart home instead of a car. He said he even made the decision to cut through parking lots and keep away from traffic.

Rowe said he had dinner with friends near a Safeway. He said he crossed over Liberty Lake Road into the Albertson’s parking lot just a couple of yards away. The cart did not have lights and it attracted the attention of an officer.

Rowe was arrested in between McDonalds and Albertson’s.

“I was like, ‘but I’m on a golf cart!’” said Rowe, “I was rushed at aggressively, I was in flips and a tee. I was being screamed out. I was scared.”

Court records show he did two breathalyzers with a .112 blood alcohol level on one and a .120 for the second.

Rowe’s case marks the third ever golf cart DUI in Liberty Lake.

State law says that a person can get a DUI if they are behind the wheel of anything capable of being moved on a public highway. This includes lawn mowers, mopeds and golf carts.

“I’m not condoning anything with the drinking, I just want public awareness on the laws regarding the various vehicles that could be arrested for,” said Rowe.
