CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It may be summer break for the kids, but it sure isn't summer break for the folks at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Every Tuesday through August 1, fans can experience thrilling races and must-see exhibits all summer long.
The Charlotte media is taking the wheel. Our very own Nick Carboni will drive the NBC Charlotte bus, in the Media Mayhem School Bus Race, hoping to roll over the competitors from several other news stations.
“It is very safe,” Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Aaron Burns says. “We’ve got everybody in there with a helmet on, a driver’s suit. We teach them how to do it. We don’t teach them how to wreck each other. I think they just bring that knowledge with themselves.”
This race is just one among several others in the Summer Shootout Series. The event includes races from bus races to port-a-john races, and more importantly legend car racing, for kids hoping to become the next Dale Jr.
“From the racing aspect, we play a very pivotal role in the budding careers of young drivers racing legend cars,” Burns says.
“They can start legend cars at 12. They race bandeleros starting at eight-years-old. So from a competition perspective the Bojangles Summer Shoot out really gives people a great opportunity to kind of hone their racing skills when they’re younger.”
The races are free for kids 13 and under. Gates open Tuesday at 5 o'clock.
