CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- It's a sex drug for women and it is certainly shaking things up in Charlotte.

"Is it really a man's world?" a woman joked about the idea.

It's essentially the female version of Viagra -- sort of.

It's designed to help women who struggle with sexual disorders -- the most common being a lack of sexual desire.

"It's about time, I suppose," one woman said.

The drug is in clinical trials now. It's being tested on women all over the country and, believe it or not, women in Charlotte are trying it out.

The number one reaction we got from women was: "Why not?"

The drug is called LibiGel. It's not a pill. It's a gel applied to your upper arm once a day.

So, how does it work? Its makers, BioSante Pharmaceuticals, say the product is absorbed into your skin, releasing a precise level of testosterone into your bloodstream. It's not too much and not too little. It's just enough to reignite a woman's sex drive and kick their sexual desire into gear.

Local women we told had these reactions:

"I don't know. Isn't that what red wine is for?"

"Why not, out of fairness."

One in three women has a low sex drive. That's twice as many as men, yet men have all the prescription products when it comes to that department.

"That's not fair," one woman said. "It's definitely not fair."

But not everyone agrees with the clinical research doctors are doing with patients at Metrolina Medical Research in Charlotte.

"We don't need it," a woman told us.

What do men think of the idea?

"Well, I mean it's good for the guys, right?" one man said.

Another told us, "I don't know how they'd really market it, but that'd be pretty interesting to watch."

The clinical trials are being done in Charlotte and Hickory.

LibiGel isn't the first sex drug to be tested for women. If it works and it’s found to be safe, it could be on the market in 2011.
