CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Police arrested a bank robbery suspect after a high-speed chase on three interstates through two counties Tuesday afternoon.

The driver was taken into custody on Interstate 85 northbound near McAdenville in Gaston County.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says the chase started after the man allegedly robbed a Wachovia bank on West Sugar Creek Road in Charlotte.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers chased the black Honda Civic along Interstate 77 in the Huntersville area.

"The Charlotte PD guys did call a 1043, which means they were involved in a chase. They went 77 north to exit 25," said State Trooper Brian Huffstickler.

Highway Patrol troopers began assisting in the chase when the vehicle got onto Interstate 485, headed toward Gaston County. The chase eventually ended up on Interstate 85 and reached speeds over 100 mph.

Police say the man was tossing money out of the car window along the way.

The man was arrested after Highway Patrol cruisers blocked in his vehicle next to the highway median barrier. AirStar 36 showed the black car trying to drive away. In the process, the car struck a trooper's vehicle. Troopers then surrounded the car and arrested the man.

"We were able to box the suspect in against the concrete barrier wall to slow him down and take him into custody," Huffstickler said.

Police identified the suspect as 29-year-old Carlos DeShawn Burns. Officers say Burns was driving a stolen vehicle. He has been charged with common law robbery, felony flee to elude and resisting arrest. More charges are pending.
