CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A Charlotte family has a son stationed at Fort Hood -- the scene of the mass shooting that left 13 people dead on Thursday. That son was there when the shootings happened. Catherine Schultze keeps her son Anthony close to her heart. "That's his dog tag,” she said, showing it off proudly while wearing it around her neck. Her phone is close at hand too after Thursday's mass shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. That's where Anthony is a member of the 1st Calvary. He is stationed at Fort Hood after his return from Iraq. Catherine was there a couple weeks ago. "It's pretty scary because we know where things were,” she said. Anthony answered her call after the shootings. “Glad to hear his voice,” she said. "He said he was OK and they were on lockdown. He said there was commotion. He said it was handled incredibly well." Her son provided some insight about the shooter. "They did say it's somebody that's being deployed and who is unhappy with the fact they're being deployed,” Catherine said. She says watching the breaking news is tough. Murders on a military base by a fellow soldier aren't supposed to happen. "What a shame, so many of them came back from the war. You know, they made it, they made it through the war and then they come back to the U.S. and they die here,” she said. Anthony answered his phone. Schultze knows calls from other moms to their sons at Fort Hood weren't. "I have a pain in my stomach just thinking about what those families are going through,” she said.
