HIDDENITE, N.C. -- A man was fatally shot by a sheriff's deputy in Alexander County after he tried to use an ax as a weapon.

A deputy shot and killed William Frederick Ippolito, 47, at his home off of Sulphurt Springs Road Sunday evening, according to the Alexander County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said they were called to the home in relation to an ongoing domestic situation. As the deputies were performing their investigation, Ippolito charged at one of them with an ax.

Ippolito was taken to a local hospital where he later died from his injuries.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave until the State Bureau of Investigation concludes its investigation.
