DAVIDSON, N.C. -- An outspoken retired Navy admiral is coming to Davidson College to discuss the role of social media in government and international relations.

The school says William Fallon is scheduled to give his talk Wednesday night on campus.

Fallon spent 41 years in the Navy, from flying combat missions during the Vietnam War to managing U.S. forces in the Middle East, Central Asia and the Horn of Africa.

In the latter role, Fallon served as Admiral of the Navy's Central Command from March 2007 to March 2008.

He retired from that post after a year when his public statements about the importance of using diplomacy instead of conflict in dealing with Iran put him at odds with the administration of President George W. Bush.
