STATESVILLE, N.C.-- A man is shot and killed early Thanksgiving morning. As neighbors hear who is charged in the murder they can’t believe their ears.

“This neighborhood we don’t have any kind of crime, it’s all families,” says neighbor Adrienne Travis.

To say the neighbors on Bostian Lake Road are close knit is an understatement. “We’re so connected that if somebody’s sick we all know that they’re sick, that’s how close we all are,” explains Tracy Patterson.

That closeness and knowledge of one another is why they can’t believe what happened there. Travis says, “When we heard the news we were just in complete and utter shock.”

Iredell County Sheriff’s Deputies say, 47 year old Rodney Herron was shot and killed here early Thanksgiving morning. “Medical personnel transported the victim to the hospital he was later pronounced dead,” explains Detective Lieutenant Andrew Poteat with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say there were only two people home when neighbors heard a single gunshot just before 6 am. Det/ Lt. Poteat says, “We believe he, the male victim lived here with what we believe to be his girlfriend.”

So they charged that 41 year old girlfriend, Cheryl Davis, with Herron’s murder.

But neighbors like Patterson say it just doesn’t make any sense. She says, “She (Davis) is a wonderful person, I’ve met her across the fence. She actually brought my daughter a birthday present when it was her birthday.”

Tonight neighbors are left wondering what happened in that apartment. Patterson says, “I would think there’s more to it.”

Davis is behind bars at the Iredell County Detention Center without bond. She’s charged with murder
