CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A new study has ranked Charlotte as one of America’s “Manliest Cities."

The third annual study released by the Combos brand and Sperling's BestPlaces ranks Charlotte as the second manliest city in the United States, dropping one spot from its top ranking in 2010.

Nashville came in first, jumping three spots.  Oklahoma City, Memphis and Columbia, South Carolina round out the top five.

“The findings offer a fun way to let the men of America know exactly where they stand against their brethren coast-to-coast," the article said.  “The rankings were determined using 50 of the largest metropolitan areas as defined by the United States Census Bureau.

Categories to assess a city's manliness included sports, manly lifestyle, concentration of manly retail stores, manly occupations and salty snack sales, among other criteria.

Charlotte ranked fourth in manly occupations, sixth in manly lifestyle, 10th in concentration of manly retail stores, and 33rd in sports.

Cities lost points for having a lot of home decor stores, sushi restaurants and cupcake shops, for example.

The top five:

1.  Nashville, TN

2.  Charlotte, NC

3.  Oklahoma City, OK

4.  Memphis, TN

5.  Columbia, SC
